The advocates proclaim the use of electric vehicles can lead to the enhancement of the environment and the safeguard of the public’s health. Naysayers, yet, question the advantages the electric vehicles bring and the number of infrastructures to support electric vehicles. This essay, in light of this, will examine some of the merits and defects on the introduction of electric vehicle.

A central argument in support of the use of electric vehicles is that it can better the environment. Most, if not all, of the tradition vehicles, have common shortcomings that they involve the use of fossil fuel, the main culprit to the emission of greenhouse gases and global warming (Dinçer, Colpan, ; Kadioglu 2013). Yet, the problem can be solved with the aid of electric vehicles. Chau ; Wong (2002) pinpoint electric vehicles are ‘zero emission’ since they are driven by electricity (p. 1). No greenhouse gases will be produced, not to mention causing global warming. The concentration of greenhouse gases in the air will be reduced. The problem of global warming can be ameliorated; and hence, improving the environment.

In addition to the betterment of the environment, introducing electric vehicles can safeguard people’s health. Incomplete combustion will occur in the vehicle engine when fossil fuel is burned to generate energy. Harmful particles, for instance, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, carbon dioxide to name but a few, as a result, be produced (Munir & Khan, 2014); and thus, lowering the air quality. In a recent journal article, Lelieveld and Poschl (2017) maintains that citizen absorbing the harmful particles will suffer to a wide range of diseases ranging from Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(Hansel, McCormack, & Kim 2016) to stroke since electric vehicles are driven by electricity which will not produce any harmful particle. The emission of the harmful particles can be declined, if not eliminated. The concentration of toxic particles in the air will be lower. The odds for the public to absorb pernicious substances will, hence, be decreased. Therefore, the possibility for people to fall prey to respiratory diseases can be dropped.

Despite the benefits of electric vehicles have, opponents question the effectiveness of them in ameliorating our environment. Though electric vehicles have zero emission when they are in use, we should not ignore the process of electric generation as the majority of energy origins from fossil fuel and electricity is no exception. Fossil fuels still need to be consumed to generate electricity. The use of electric vehicles is not tantamount to zero emission but simply shifting the pollutant from the vehicles to the electricity generator. Worse still, Dinçer, Colpan and Kadioglu, (2013) argue that loss of energy will be raised significantly and energy efficiency will be much lower compared to tradition vehicles if we take account of the transfer or generation of energy process. Greenhouse gases emission will be even higher which is not conducive to the environment. The use of electric vehicles will not only improve the environment but merely worsen the situation. Electric vehicles are nothing but a bane in disguise.

In addition to the question of effectiveness in enhancing the environment is the lack of infrastructures to support electric vehicle. Not alike to tradition vehicles, electric vehicles require charging station to charge the battery. However, most of the countries introducing electric vehicles will encounter the problem of the scarcity of charging station — the primary drawbacks of electric vehicles as asserted by Dinçer, Colpan and Kadioglu, (2013). Accordingly, charging stations for electric vehicles are not ubiquitous in the streets(Cheng,2016). Complaints may be made by people purchasing electric vehicles since it is inconvenient for them to charge their car. The effort the authority put to introduce electric vehicles will be in vain since people will seldom buy nor use them due to the lack of charging stations. Seemingly, Hong Kong’s infrastructures can barely back the electric vehicles.

By and large, the essay has presented arguments for and against the introduction of the electric vehicle in Hong Kong. The benefits encompass the improvement of the environment and the guarantee to the public’s health. Nevertheless, the disadvantages incorporate the need of infrastructures to support electric vehicles and the utility in enhancing the environment. the above analysis suggests that the cons outweigh the pros. For one thing, the merits electric vehicles bring will mostly be offset by the low efficiency; for another thing, the facilities in Hong Kong are not well appointed to sustain the use of the electric vehicle.
