Music is the solution for those who struggle with depression, Depression is a condition in which a person’s main emotions withdraw, and there is a prolonged sadness over a period of time. Depression, is no longer something that is taken lightly and is a serious medical illness that is common in our society. If not treated properly depression can lead to devestating emotional and physical issues. In the United States, 2.2 million people from 12 to 17 suffered from depression, which 9.0% of the U.S. population aged 12 to 17 (NIMH, 2016). The side effects Depression are low self esteem, poor sleep, and change in appetite. If not treated properly depression can lead to suicide, which takes up to 1 million deaths a year according to the World Health Organisation.
When treating this traumatic illness, Antidepressants are almost always used to “cure” depression, however, antidepressants can have dreadful side effects. Studies including one published by Joseph Glenmullen in his book Prozac Backlash: Overcoming the Dangers of Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, and Other states that suicide and violent behavior is greater in those who use antidepressants. Which is why one must take an alternative route when it dealing with mental illness, and let music therapy be the answer.
