Links to Experience FORMTEXT The students have observed the Sun and they are on Earth so they are familiar with those terms. I would link the location of earth to where the sun is located and how we have day and night to describe where the earth is positioned. I would have the students list characteristics about the earth to describe how we are not the closets to the sun and how there are other planets in the solar system. We are linking it from that lesson and the basic things we have learned from the sun and the earth. We have covered this the day before because having the students know where the earth is located at in relation to the sun. Key Vocabulary FORMTEXT We will first introduce what a solar system is and have a visual aid that was made out of clothes hangers and planets. Each key vocab that I will introduce will come with a visual aid for the child to put a picture to the key word. The key vocabualry will also be taught through the planet word wheel, solar system bingo, and also the song and video we will be playing. The students will be given a 3 by 3 Bingo card. The students will be listening closely to us as we call out facts about the planets. The students are trying to get three up, down, diagnol, or across to win. We will keep playing mulitple times if the students would like. We will come up with many facts for each planet to say that is different from the last. Review Key Content Concepts FORMTEXT The students will complete an exit ticket where they have to have the planets in order as well as write one fact that goes along with each planet. The students have learned a lot of facts on each planet so they should have plenty fresh in their minds. Description of Lesson In our lesson, we are first going to review about the Sun and the Earth from a previous lesson that was gone over the day before. As we go over that, we are going to start introducing the the new key vocabulary which are the different planets and exactly what order they are in, which is the solar system. We will then go other each planet in the solar system represented by a poster with a picture for each and a fact about each. When we are finished going through all of the planets we will play a song about the planets in order. We will repeat the video many times and also pause and go over and add facts to each planet as they go through. Once the video finishes, we will go over the order again and think of a tip/saying that will help memorizing the order of the planets better. This will help the students during assessments and other assignments to remember the planets in the correct order. As we go over that, we have our first activity in which we will be making a solar system vocabulary pin-wheel. This is an individual assignment. The students will cut out, put together, and color their pin wheel. Once everyone makes their pin-wheel they will go other each planet in the pin-wheel with a partner. The class will come back together and we will go over the pin-wheel and repeat our saying again. The pin-wheel will be used as a helpful study guide for the students in the future. As a fun activity, each student will be given a worksheet that says to create their own planet. Each student will either draw or represent their made-up planet out of play-dough or color pencils. This will help students know that all planets have their own unique characteristics about them. The students will be given the opportunity to present their own planet to the class. After we are all done with this we will play the song of the planets again just as a reminder to keep the repetition of the song and order in the students minds. As our class comes to a close we will play a game. We will need the students to get into groups of about 5-7. They will be on a team and given 9 pieces of paper labeled with each planet and a picture. The labeled planets will be out of order and the students will have to work as a team to organize the planets in order. The team is going to have to stand in order with their planets held up and the first team to get it done will win a prize. The group that wins must have each planet in order and the students must say the planet they represent. As all the students get back to their seats, we will go over the planets we learned and exactly what they represent and what order they go in. For a final review of vocabulary we will be playing solar system bingo. The students will get a 3 by 3 BINGO card to use. We will call out characteristics for each planet in an unknown order. The students will have to use their knowledge to figure out the one to cover. That would be the last activity for the lesson. As an exit ticket, the students will be writing a fact about each planet and including the sun that they have learned today. This will help them review the definition of the key vocabulary.
